Instead, according to Freud, it is a longing for paternal protection in childhood that continues into adult life as a sustained "fear of the superior power of Fate." After summarizing his previous research, Freud returns to the question of "oceanic" feeling, finding it unconvincing as an explanation of the source of religious sentiment in human beings. ![]() This distinction between inside and outside is a crucial part of the process of psychological development, allowing the ego to recognize a "reality" separate from itself. In general, the ego perceives itself as maintaining "sharp and clear lines of demarcation" with the outside world. Churches and religious institutions are adept at channeling this sentiment into particular belief systems, but they do not themselves create it. This feeling is "a purely subjective fact, not an article of faith." It does not betoken an allegiance to a specific religion, but instead points to the source of religious sentiment in human beings. In the introductory paragraphs, Freud attempts to understand the spiritual phenomenon of a so-called "oceanic" feeling - the sense of boundlessness and oneness felt between the ego and the outside world. ![]() ![]() ![]() Swanson, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema – The Painter of the Victorian Vision of the Ancient World, 1977, illustrated p.22 Rudolph Dircks, ‘The Later Works of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema O.A, R.A., R.W.S.’, 1910, p.28 Īnna Maria Diana Wilhemina Stirling, The Richmond Papers, 1926, p.13:įrederic Louis Bastet, Mr. Standing, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, 1905, p.58 Marion Henry Spielmann, ‘ Laurence Alma-Tadema, R.A., A Sketch’ in Magazine of Art, November 1896-April 1897, p.50 įedor Il’ich Bulgakov, Alma-Tadema, 1897, opposite p,22, illustrated p.28 William Cosmo Monkhouse, ‘Laurens Alma-Tadema R.A.’, in Scribners Magazine, December 1895, illustrated p.677 įrederick George Stephens, Laurence Alma-Tadema, R.A., A Sketch of his Life and Work, 1895, illustrated Plate III Letts Household Magazine, 1891, illustrated p.79 Wilfred Meynell, Some Modern Artists and their Work, 1887, p.17 Helen Zimmern, The Great Modern Painters, English, French, German etc., Medalist of successive Universal Exhibitions II, 1886, illustrated p.273 Alma-Tadema – Royal Academician: His Life and Works’, in Art Journal, Christmas supplement, 1886, p.11 ![]() Georg Moritz Ebers, ‘Lourens Alma Tadema’, in Westermanns Illustrierte Deutsche Monatschefte fur das Gesamte Geistige Leben der Gegenwart, pp.77-8 Illustrated London News, 6 April 1878, p.326 Carel Vosmaer, ‘Venus Esquilina’, in de Nederlandsche Spectator, 1877, pp.371-2 ![]() ![]() ![]() Well written with accessible language, this book will appeal to a wide range of readers.
